SOY PROTEIN REVIEWS
With whey protein and casein protein both being a dairy based protein source , soy protein comes from the soy bean. While not having the same Biological Value as Whey, Soy Protein Isolate still has a minimum 90% protein content. Probably the most beneficial feature of Soy protein is that it has very low levels of fat and in some instances free from it altogether. This is ideal in many bodybuilding and athletic regimes, as it provides a good protein source without unwanted fat levels. Another major benefit of Soy Protein is that it is a suitable source of protein for those who are lactose intolerant and cannot consume whey protein. In addition to being a major protein source, Soy protein is abundant with chemical compounds such as Saponins, Phytosterols and Isoflavones. Lets look at these in a little more detail.

Saponins
Saponins are chemical compounds, found in Soy, that help support a healthy immune system. There are even some claims that Saponins can reduce the risk if colon cancer (through binding cancer cells rich in cholesterol) and may inhibit the HIV virus. As with whey protein, Soy should never be taken as a replacement for any medically prescribed treatments and you should consult your practitioner if you are taking any medications before taking Soy.

Phytosterols
Physterols found in Soy protein can aid in keeping a healthy level of cholesterol. High cholesterol levels can cause conditions such as Stroke and Heart Attacks.

Isoflavones
Isoflavones have antioxidant effects, most comparable to that of Vitamin E. In addition to this, they can have many other beneficial effects. These include the ease of menopausal symptoms, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve the health of bones and reduce prostate problems in men.

Overall Soy Protein is widely regarded to have beneficial effects. Like whey however, it has its critics and its negative points. The first one being those with a soy allergy cannot take soy protein, as they can't with many whey proteins. Some researchers also believe Soy, or more specifically the Isoflavones in Soy, can be responsible for goitre and hyperthyroidism. Goitre is a condition where the thyroid gland can swell or become enlarged and hyperthyroidism is an over-active thyroid gland.
